Understanding Brew Ratios
Brew ratio is one of the most important variables in coffee brewing. It determines both the strength (how concentrated the coffee is) and the extraction (how much flavor is extracted from the beans).
Tighter ratios (more coffee, less water like 1:12) produce stronger, more concentrated coffee with bolder flavors. Wider ratios (less coffee, more water like 1:18) create lighter, more delicate coffee.
Different brew methods work best with different ratios. Espresso uses very tight ratios (1:2), while pour-over and drip coffee typically use 1:15 to 1:17. French press works well with 1:15, and cold brew uses even wider ratios (1:8 to 1:12) because of the long steeping time.
